Deodorants have long been part of our personal hygiene, but in recent years, possible health risks from their daily use have been discussed. The reason is their main active ingredient – ALUMINUM.

Why do deodorants contain aluminum?

Aluminum compounds, such as aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum zirconium, are very commonly used in antiperspirants. These compounds are effective because they temporarily block sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin surface and keeping armpits dry.

Possible Health Risks

Irritations and Allergies

Common skin reactions when using deodorants include redness, itching, and allergic reactions. These are provoked by both aluminum compounds and the various chemical ingredients and synthetic fragrances in antiperspirants that mask body odor.

Accumulation in the Body

Some studies suggest that small amounts of aluminum can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Over time, aluminum can accumulate in the body, as it has limited ways to excrete the metal. This accumulation raises concerns that prolonged use of aluminum-containing products may have negative consequences on the body's hormonal balance.

Breast Cancer

The potential link between aluminum and breast cancer is still being studied, with primary research focusing on the absorption of aluminum compounds through the skin with regular antiperspirant use. Since the underarm area is close to breast tissue, aluminum may increase the risk of breast cancer because once in the body, it mimics estrogen – the hormone known to stimulate the growth of certain types of breast cancer cells.

Deodorants with aluminum are not yet banned because studies on their safety are currently ongoing, but increasing consumer awareness is leading to an increase in demand for aluminum-free deodorants. These are often made from natural ingredients that neutralize body odor without blocking sweat glands. They are available in various formats (cream, stick) and with a variety of scents.

Below you will find suggestions for natural aluminum-free deodorants from two beloved Bulgarian brands – Wooden Spoon and Sapynena Rabotilnitsa.
